What places in nature inspire you?
In general, everywhere, but I have my favorites. Also, I have places I personally know & can get to, versus remembered places and places seen only in photographs. I'm mostly a mountain girl, but pondering this I realized I like the open places, scattered trees, meadows, views of peaks. I live in the dry southwest, so I'm not really remembering lush green places when I say mountains. I'm remembering lots of dusty red clay under my feet, and yes the trees, pine and oak, they're green, but the other vegetation are dryish grasses, under an enormous and brilliant blue sky, with puffy white clouds the size of islands, continents. I say remember, because I haven't been to the mountains in years. That was part of my childhood, mostly. Now, my nature place is my nearby irrigation ditch. It's part of New Mexico's culture, networks of arroyos, dug branching off from the river, which itself is hard to get to. My neighborhood was built on farmland, and there are still farmers growing alfalfa and corn here & there, and ditches(arroyos) with bridges and water release gates, and wide pathways to either side. I've been walking my dogs there for 18 years. Sometimes you're behind houses and backyards, other times next to the farmers fields, with a view of a blue line of mountains and nature showing you something different everyday: in the fall, flocks of cranes strutting through what's left of the corn, in spring and summer a cycle of wildflowers. I've encountered turtles, pheasants, nutrias (kind of a river otter), abandoned apple and apricot trees gone wild. goldenrods, horsetail, dock.
Oops, I guess I really answered the second question, about my favorite places in nature. As far as inspiration, I found a theme, whether it's places I really
go or places I only dream of going to: I like space. One of my first memories of nature is a mountain meadow, a mystery memory I carried for years till I figured out where it was. High, up against the blue sky, open to the sun, surrounded by forest, teeming with life. I love seeing high mountains, rearing up, awesome, ahead of you. The wide mysterious spaces of deserts, magical. These are the kind of places that inspire me. Little secret places you discover around a turn in a path can be wonderful too. I'm inspired by exploring and discovering, called by paths.
How does nature inspire me?
The quiet nourishes me. although my nature places have plenty of sound- wind trees, birds, bugs. This noise and this quiet are healing. I feel an aliveness all around me that I kind of soak up. The places and the plants have a living personality I like to be surrounded by. Also as I walk I find it easy to make up songs, and dream up paintings beyond my skill to accomplish(so I take cellphone pictures!)
